"name": "Commercial RCD Installation & Testing | Kilowatts UK",
"description": "Why RCD protection matters at work Electrical safety is a top priority for every business, and one of the most effective ways to protect your staff, customers and property is RCD protection. A residual current device (RCD) switches off the supply within a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth, for example through damaged cable insulation or a person touching a live part. That rapid reaction greatly reduces the risk of a fatal electric shock, and it can also reduce the risk of fire caused by earth leakage. In commercial premises where kitchens, washrooms, outdoor sockets or damp areas are common, RCDs provide a vital layer of protection. Businesses often overlook the risks of outdated or missing protective devices. Without RCD protection in place, a simple electrical fault can expose employees or visitors to serious harm. Insurers increasingly expect premises to meet current electrical safety standards, and failing to upgrade can leave a business exposed to both legal and financial liabilities. Adding RCD protection is not just a box-ticking exercise; it is a responsible step that safeguards lives and shows you take safety seriously. What the UK rules actually require In the UK, the requirement is RCD protection under BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. The current version is BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, which became the only current edition when the earlier amendments were withdrawn on 15 October 2026. For new work, BS 7671 calls for additional protection by an RCD with a rated residual operating current of no more than 30 mA for, among other things: socket-outlets rated up to 32 A (outside dwellings, a documented risk assessment can justify omitting it for a specific socket); mobile equipment rated up to 32 A used outdoors; many cables concealed in walls or partitions at a depth of less than 50 mm that have no other mechanical protection; circuits in locations containing a bath or shower. The legal duty sits with the business. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems to be constructed and maintained so as to prevent danger, so far as is reasonably practicable. Following BS 7671 is the recognised way to show a fixed installation meets that duty. Older installations are not automatically unlawful because they pre-date a rule, but an inspector will record missing RCD protection on an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) where it creates a risk. Planning the right RCD arrangement The installation process begins with a thorough inspection of your current electrical system. The local electricians you compare through Kilowatts UK identify higher-risk circuits, such as those serving kitchens, washrooms, outdoor sockets or workshop areas, and recommend how best to protect them. Protection can be provided by RCBOs (a combined RCD and circuit breaker) on individual circuits, by an RCD protecting a group of circuits in the distribution board or consumer unit, or by an RCD socket at a single point. Individual RCBOs mean one fault does not switch off a whole floor or kitchen, which matters in a busy shop or restaurant. The type of RCD matters too. BS 7671 restricts Type AC devices, and circuits feeding equipment such as variable-speed drives, EV chargers or many modern appliances may need Type A, F or B devices; the electrician selects the type to suit the load. Many businesses schedule RCD work alongside other upgrades, such as fuse box upgrades or commercial lighting improvements, to reduce disruption and bring the whole system up to date together. Testing, certification and periodic inspection Professional installation means each device is correctly wired, tested with an RCD tester to confirm it trips within the required time, and recorded on a certificate. You should receive an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) for new circuits or a new distribution board, or a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) where protection is added to an existing circuit. Building Regulations Part P notification applies to dwellings in England, so it is not needed for most purely commercial work, although mixed-use buildings with flats can be different. You will also get advice on ongoing maintenance. Electrical Safety First recommends pressing each RCD's test button every six months, and recommends periodic inspection of a business installation at least every five years, with the inspector able to set a shorter interval for kitchens, workshops and other demanding environments. Some businesses use the same visit to review wider energy plans, and the commercial solar comparison service makes it easy to compare renewable specialists too. Home and business: what is different At home, RCD work that involves a new circuit or a replacement consumer unit is notifiable under Part P in England. In a business, Part P does not apply, but the Electricity at Work Regulations do. Larger sites often have three-phase supplies and several distribution boards, so the electrician needs to look at how RCDs are arranged across the site rather than at a single board, and the EICR becomes part of your maintenance records. Compare quotes for commercial RCD protection The benefits extend beyond compliance. Staff gain peace of mind knowing they are protected from unexpected faults, customers see that you prioritise safety, and you avoid the costly downtime that accidents or electrical failures can cause. Whether you manage a restaurant, office, shop or industrial unit, this small but important upgrade helps future-proof your premises.
