About this service

Clear advice for your next step

Sleek, modern ceiling lighting

Downlights, sometimes called spotlights, give you a sleek, modern way to light your home. Kilowatts UK gives you access to electricians who design and install fittings that are safe, stylish and energy efficient.

The process begins with a design consultation, where layout, beam angle and dimming options are discussed. Electricians fit LED downlights, adjustable spotlights and fire-rated fittings, all with concealed wiring for a clean finish. That makes downlights a good fit for living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms and hallways where a streamlined look is wanted. Rather than a fixed spacing rule, a good layout depends on ceiling height, beam angle and what each part of the room is used for.

Fire, insulation and the ceiling

Cutting holes in a ceiling can affect fire safety, sound and insulation. Where the ceiling helps stop fire spreading, for example between flats, below a loft conversion or above an integral garage, fire-rated downlights should be used so the ceiling keeps its fire resistance under Approved Document B. Where loft insulation sits over the fittings, choose downlights designed to be covered by insulation, or fit suitable covers, so they do not overheat and the insulation is not compressed. In bathrooms, BS 7671 zones decide the IP rating needed above or near the bath or shower, and all circuits in the room need 30 mA RCD protection.

Layered lighting

For layered schemes, downlights can be paired with statement fittings. You might add pendant lights over kitchen islands or install track lighting systems for flexibility. Combining them gives both general and task lighting throughout the home.

Wiring standards and Part P

Safety and efficiency are always a priority. Work is carried out to BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, the current IET Wiring Regulations, which requires 30 mA RCD protection for new lighting circuits in homes, and LED downlights cut energy bills while lasting much longer than halogen lamps. In England, adding downlights to an existing lighting circuit is not usually notifiable under Part P, unless it is in the zones around a bath or shower; a new circuit is notifiable. You should receive a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate (MEIWC) or, for a new circuit, an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC). For renewable upgrades, the solar comparison service is a simple way to explore further savings.

From planning to installation and finishing touches, downlights can create a comfortable, efficient and stylish home. Request quotes through Kilowatts UK to connect with local electricians, or call free on 0800 009 6058.

FAQ

Need Help? RoboMo's Got Answers

What are downlights and why are they popular?
Downlights are fitted into the ceiling so only a small trim shows. They give general, task or accent lighting with very little visual clutter.
Where should I install downlights?
They work well in kitchens, living rooms, hallways and bathrooms. In bathrooms, fittings near the bath or shower need a suitable IP rating.
Do I need fire-rated downlights?
Where the ceiling forms a fire barrier, such as between flats, under a loft conversion or above an integral garage, yes. Fire-rated fittings help the ceiling keep its fire resistance.
Do I need building control approval to fit downlights?
Not usually if they are added to an existing lighting circuit outside the bathroom zones. A new circuit, or work near a bath or shower, is notifiable under Part P in England.
