Solar panels and battery storage in Thanet: yields, costs and planning across the district
Last reviewed: 26 October 2026. Figures are estimates unless stated; method and sources are given beside each one.
Thanet is one of the better places in England to put panels on a roof, but the difference between Thanet's towns is small. What really changes the numbers is which way your roof faces, whether it sits in one of Thanet District Council's 27 conservation areas, and whether you own the roof. This page covers all three for the whole district. For town detail, see our guides for Margate, Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Birchington and Westgate-on-Sea.

How much electricity do solar panels generate in Thanet?
We ran PVGIS for four points across the district. The table shows the estimated yearly output per kilowatt-peak (kWp) of panels at a 35° pitch:
| Location (PVGIS point) | South | South-west | South-east | West | East |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manston plateau (51.346, 1.346) | 1,095 | 1,037 | 1,018 | 869 | 846 |
| Margate (51.389, 1.386) | 1,086 | 1,026 | 1,010 | 859 | 839 |
| Ramsgate (51.335, 1.419) | 1,078 | 1,020 | 1,003 | 854 | 832 |
| Broadstairs (51.360, 1.432) | 1,071 | 1,012 | 997 | 848 | 828 |

From the table:
- Your town hardly matters. The best and worst south-facing results differ by about 2%.
- Your roof's direction matters a lot. An east- or west-facing slope gives roughly 20–23% less than a south-facing one in every town.
- Example estimate: a 4 kWp south-facing array near Manston gives about 4,380 kWh a year (4 × 1,095).
Output is also very seasonal. At Manston, PVGIS gives about 134 kWh per kWp in June but only about 37 in December. In midwinter you will still buy most of your power from the grid.
How we got these figures: PVGIS (EU Joint Research Centre), v5.3 PVcalc API, SARAH3 radiation data, 1 kWp crystalline-silicon array, building-integrated/roof mounting, 35° pitch, 14% system losses. Values are long-run annual averages, not a guarantee for any one roof; shading, pitch and panel choice change the result.
What does solar cost in Thanet? (2025/26 estimates)
| System size | Typical home | Estimated installed cost (excl. battery) |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 kWp | Terrace or small semi | ≈ £6,500 |
| 4 kWp | Semi-detached | ≈ £7,400 |
| 5 kWp | Larger semi or detached | ≈ £8,600 |
| 6 kWp | Detached, good roof space | ≈ £10,300 |
Estimate method: system size × the South East mean installed cost per kW for 2025/26 from DESNZ's Solar PV cost data (£1,858.90/kW for 0–4 kW systems; £1,721.49/kW for 4–10 kW). DESNZ figures are averages from MCS-registered installs and include equipment, installation, connection and VAT where applicable; they exclude batteries. Your quotes will differ with roof access, scaffolding, panel and inverter choice.
Batteries are an extra cost. The Energy Saving Trust gives a wide range of about £1,500 to £10,000 depending on capacity, and says a typical battery lasts 10–12 years. Use our battery calculator to size one against your own usage.
Residential solar panels and batteries are zero-rated for VAT when an installer supplies and fits them, until 31 March 2027 (HMRC VAT Notice 708/6).
Owners, landlords and leaseholders: who can say yes?
The 2021 Census counted 62,200 households in Thanet (ONS TS054):
- 61.4% own their home, and 36.5% own it outright.
- 26.3% rent privately.
- 11.9% rent social housing.
By home type (ONS TS044):
- 17.6% live in purpose-built flats.
- 6.5% live in part of a converted or shared house.
If you rent, or live in a flat, the decision may rest with your landlord or freeholder. Get their written consent before you request quotes.
Planning: conservation areas across Thanet's towns and villages
Under national permitted development rules, most roof-mounted panels on a house need no planning application. They must meet these limits (GPDO 2015, Schedule 2, Part 14, Class A):
- On a pitched roof, panels must not stick out more than 0.2 m from the roof slope.
- They must not sit higher than the highest part of the roof, excluding chimneys.
The rules were updated on 27 August 2026:
- Listed homes are excluded from these rights.
- Panels on a wall, balcony or roof enclosure that fronts a highway in a conservation area are excluded.
- The rules now cover plug-in solar, except on timber-clad walls or wooden balconies.
Thanet's own guidance is stricter. Thanet District Council's conservation-area page says that in a conservation area, panels should go on the side or rear of the building and should not front the highway. We suggest planning on that basis: in any of Thanet's conservation areas, assume side or rear slopes only, and check with Thanet District Council before you consider a street-facing slope. The same page says flats in a conservation area need permission. National rules now include blocks of flats, so if you live in a flat, check with Thanet District Council first.
The council's page lists its Article 4 directions in Ramsgate, the Ramsgate Marina extension and Pegwell. The national planning.data service also holds Thanet Article 4 records that are not described there. Check with the council whether any apply to your address.
Thanet District Council lists 27 conservation areas. As well as the town centres and seafronts, they include village centres such as Minster, Monkton, Acol, Sarre and St Nicholas at Wade. Barns and outbuildings in those villages are often the best-facing roofs on the plot. Before you assume an outbuilding is permitted development, check:
- whether it is listed or within the curtilage of a listed building (Thanet listed building checker);
- whether a conservation area or Article 4 direction covers it.

Connecting to the grid in Thanet
UK Power Networks runs Thanet's local network. If your system is rated up to 16 A per phase (about 3.68 kW on a normal single-phase supply), it falls under G98: your installer fits it and then notifies UK Power Networks. Larger systems, including many with a big battery inverter, need a G99 application before installation (ENA G98 guide; UK Power Networks). Plan for this when you size a system. To earn money for the electricity you export through the Smart Export Guarantee, you normally need an MCS-certified installation, or one under an equivalent scheme, plus a suitable export meter (Ofgem SEG guidance; MCS).
